Prefixation in Neglect Dyslexia
Left Neglect dyslexia (ND) is an acquired reading disorder that impairs the apperception of the left side of words and sentences. Importantly, in this syndrome, orthographic and lexical factors have been shown to modulate the exploration of written material. The present study exploited ND to investigate how prefixation is attended to in the process of reading. Two main issues were addressed: if the orthographic morphological structure of words modulates attention, and, in particular, if lexical information may further modulate this susceptibility at higher levels of processing. A set of prefixed and pseudo-prefixed stimuli was thus administered to a patient affected by ND. ND resulted sensitive to the morphological structure of stimuli: the vast majority of left errors specifically affected prefixes. These errors distributed unequally depending on lexical factors like semantic transparency and stem boundedness.
