Event structured cognition: the role of hippocampal ripples

The transformation from ongoing experience to discrete memory episodes is thought to rely on the identification of boundaries that separate events, but the underlying neural mechanisms remain unknown. Hippocampal ripples are prominent short-lived synchronization events generated by hippocampal neuronal assemblies associated with neural plasticity changes underlying memory formation. Here, we leverage the anatomical precision of intracranial electroencephalographic recordings from epileptic patients to assess the presence of hippocampal ripples concurrent with the detection of event boundaries during the encoding of a 50-min movie film (i.e., Sherlock). In the current talk I will be presenting the preliminary results of the above-mentioned study.
