Bringing neuroscience to the classroom

On Thursday 15th a group of twenty high school students from Institut Rubió i Ors (Hospitalet de Llobregat) visited our lab, the Cognition and Brain Plasticity group at IDIBELL, to take part in the workshop  “The brain made of plasticine”, framed in the EscoLab program. The Barcelona city council promotes this initiative yearly to bring together schools and scientific research.

Two predoctoral researchers from the group, Berta Nicolás and Patricia León, along with Dra. Cori Veciana, a neurophysiologist from Hospital de Bellvitge, organized an engaging workshop for the students. First, the whole group attended an introductory oral session on cognitive neuroscience. Later, they experienced two hands-on sessions in which they learnt about the motor system by seeing how transcranial magnetic stimulation works in vivo, and they also discovered how researchers study the memory system at the lab.
