Unraveling the cognitive basis of confirmation bias
Abstract
Humans are imperfect information processors. One good example of this is the “confirmation bias”, by which we have the tendency to search for, favor, and recall that information that confirms one’s preexisting beliefs or hypotheses. Recent work has tried to elucidate which cognitive processes are involved in this cognitive bias. Some authors point toward attentional biases (Talluri et al., 2018) at the origin of such suboptimal behavior whereas others suggest that the bias arises during sensory information decoding (i.e. interpretation) (Luu and Stocker, 2018). In this project I aim to disambiguate between both alternative explanations by combining psychophysics and electroencephalography (EEG). Moreover, I will extend our research to investigate the involvement of memory processes in the formation of biased decisions.
