Exploring Perceptual Category Learning in Developmental Dyslexia
The underlying causes of developmental dyslexia remain under extensive debate despite decades of research. Although the emphasis has been on phonological deficits (i.e., in use of speech building blocks like [b] vs. [p] in bat vs. pat), there is growing evidence of more general procedural learning impairments in dyslexia. Learning the sounds of a language can be conceived as a procedural category learning challenge, a notion that is supported by recent research and theoretical models. However, little is known about how people with dyslexia cope with procedural auditory category learning challenges. I will describe ongoing research showing that procedural learning of artificial nonspeech sound categories is selectively disrupted in dyslexia. Decision-bound computational modeling analyses applied to category learning data reveal limited and less efficient use of procedural-based strategies in dyslexia compared to neurotypicals. This work portrays a possible link between procedural learning deficits and phonological impairments, which are ubiquitous in dyslexia.
