Will present the talk entitled:

Memory consolidation: the nonmonotonic malleability hypothesis

Abstract

Understanding memory consolidation is a hallmark in psychological and neuroscientific research. Here, we borrowed concepts of Network Science to describe how memory representations change over time. The central tenet of our proposal is that memories shift from highly segregated (e.g., episodic memories) to richly integrated (e.g., semantic memories) forms over time. We argue that this dynamic transformation optimally balances the need to maximize accessibility and to minimize information loss in long term. In doing so, we find the existence of a nonlinear reactivation function that depicts the susceptibility of a memory trace to be malleable (i.e., changed/updated), depending on its architectural configuration form. We will discuss how our model offers insights to account for the dynamics of fundamental time-dependent memory phenomena such as forgetting, schema formation, and reconsolidation.
