Rhythm Predictability and Liking in Complex Stimuli

Music is one of the activities people usually report as pleasurable. It is thought that this pleasantness is due to the exploitation of predictive mechanisms.

In our current project, we tried to disentangle between context predictions and the complexity of rhythm produced by participants.

To do so, we developed complex stimuli with multiple voices. We then used the Information Dynamics of Music model, model captures the statistical features of music, to orthogonally manipulate the complexity of the context and the complexity of the target rhythms.

Here, we present the results of the pilot phase of the experiment alongside with the results of the validation experiment of these complex stimuli.
