Joanna Sierpowska – Thesis defense

Joanna graduated in Psychology at the University of Wroclaw (Poland) in 2009. From the early beginnings of her studies she was interested in how the neurological disorders may impact persons’ cognitive function and wellbeing, and how, at the same time patients ‘difficulties may aid in understanding brain functional organization. This interest brought her to undergo a series of clinical internships and to study Neuropsychology at the Université de Bordeaux II, in France. To learn more about the neurobiological bases of cognition, she decided to do a PhD starting by a training in Neurosciences at the University of Barcelona. In 2012 she joined Cognition and Brain Plasticity Unit to investigate new manners of neuropsychological evaluation of language in patients undergoing awake brain surgery. She is particularly interested in white matter plastic changes and functional reorganization in the presence of brain tumors. A close collaboration with Hospital Universitari de Bellvitge nicely fitted to both of her interests: clinical and scientific.

Joanna will defend her PhD this September in the Doctoral Program in Biomedicine being supervised by Drs. Antoni Rodríguez Fornells and Andreu Gabarrós Canals.
